Jose Santisteban has been working with glass as an artistic medium since 1999. After receiving a BA in Literature and Theory from Vanderbilt University he relocated to Seattle, WA where his passion for glass was ignited. It was then that Jose realized that creating works of art from glass was his path.
His dedication to the medium lead him to Rochester, NY where he attained an MFA in Glass Sculpture from the School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
While at RIT he was able to cultivate a multi-faceted approach to working with glass. Fusing, lampworking, lost-wax casting, Pate-de-Verre and engraving all became part of his vocabulary to express ideas in glass. A love for other mediums was nurtured as well, such as ceramics, metal, wood and found objects. After graduating Jose traveled to Portland and Eugene Oregon, Corning NY, Murano/Venice Italy and Birmingham Alabama to continue his study of glass.
This young artist gathers inspiration from the world around him. The observation of nature, geometry, structure, chaos and social interactions provide an overwhelming array of ideas for him. As a child he became fascinated with water in all its many forms- rain, snow, lakes, streams, oceans, ice and steam. This awe-like sensibility is perhaps why Jose shares such an affinity with glass.
Jose considers himself blessed to have the drive and opportunity to work with this medium. His gratitude is reflected in the art that he creates, embedded within each work. This path is constantly evolving and expanding for him in his mission to create meaningful works.
